Texting Clients: A Good Idea for Real Estate Agents?
Question- How many phone calls have you made today compared to sending a text? I can already say that I have sent plenty of takes and made very few calls, I’m sure you are in the same boat. It is well known that we prefer texts over phone calls. In fact, I have asked certain people who have called me during the day, “why couldn’t you just text me that?”
Texting is no longer just for teenagers. It is growing as an acceptable and efficient form of communication when doing business. You can walk by any office desk and I can guarantee their phone will be less than arm’s length away.
For real estate agents, the question is whether or not this is an acceptable way to communicate with clients.
Why the answer is Yes:
Immediate and Effortless
We like information now, especially in the real estate world. Sending an email or leaving a voicemail can waste precious time. A text sends information in an instant. Even if a client can’t answer the phone or check their email, they can most likely read a text.
Build a Relationship
Being accessible to your client is important. Being able to send them a text with updated or important information lets your client know you are working hard for them. It is important to discuss when you are available, you don’t want a text at 3 a.m.. But letting them know that they can reach you through text can help them feel more comfortable when working with you.
Friendly Reminders
You both have a busy schedule. Appointments or getting important documents together can sometimes slip a client’s mind. Being able to send a friendly reminder makes sure that everyone is one the same page. You can go through the process without wasting time or resources.
The proper way to text a client:
Use Full Sentences and Correct Grammar
Texting our friends in abbreviations is one thing, but texting a client in abbreviations is a no-no. For one, you will brand yourself as unprofessional. Make sure to use full sentences and always check your grammar. Abbreviated terms can also be misconstrued leaving a client scratching their head.
Be Aware of Tone
I have found myself in hot water a few times with my wife. She has read a message or two where I meant one thing but the tone put it in a totally different context. Don’t do this when texting a client. You can avoid it by using the same tone of voice as you would speaking face to face.
Appropriate Length
Making a text too long can be a little annoying. On the other hand, making it too short can send the wrong message. When texting be thorough and direct with the information you are sending your client.
Be Friendly
You are helping someone with the most important financial decision of their lives. Be direct but be friendly. Show some excitement when you are reminding them about your scheduled meeting. The more friendly and approachable you are the better your relationship will be.
Ask your client up front if they are okay with texting as a form of communication. Make sure to follow these guidelines and text away!
